We stopped off bear on our way to Scotland. We had a lovely afternoon tea in a quiet corner of their beautiful restaurant. A great selection of sandwiches and sweet... read more treats, the staff were so friendly and chatty.
July 14, 2023First class (as always) - This was our third visit to Alnwick and The Cookie Jar, and as usual it was an excellent stay.
A small boutique hotel (11 rooms), you are made... read more to feel welcome be it a first stay or a return. The hotel has undergone some changes since our stay in August of 2022, with updated decor and furnishings (not that there was anything wrong with it before), but it is just a very smart yet homely feel, and Debbie (the owner) and her team have done a first class job.
We stayed in Room Dunstanborough, on the second floor, this is one of the luxury rooms, at the front of the hotel, and is very well appointed, with a large bed, and two easy chairs. There is a large walk in shower and good sized bathroom (no bath).
The room could have done with a better placed mirror for hair drying according to my wife, but this is a minor criticism and she made do, but otherwise it was a very comfortable room, and we also made good use of the large supplied fan!
The hotel has a lovely restaurant with a good set selection of three courses (or two), we ate here on the first night of our four night stay, and the food was excellent, as was the service. There is a very comfortable lounge area for pre-dinner drinks or coffee or a drink afterwards.
The breakfast is very well done, with a particular recommendation going to the yoghurt/granola/fruit pot, delicious 😋 The food is fresh, well prepared, and nothing is too much trouble.
It should also be noted that the afternoon tea is outstanding, and not to be missed. This is something my wife and I particularly enjoy, and we are both in agreement that it is one of the best to be found anywhere.
The staff are for the most part quite young, but are extremely attentive, helpful, and unfailingly polite. A special shout out to Lynn, who is a ray of sunshine all on her own, and always welcoming and smiling, seeing her feels like meeting an old friend each time we visit!
All in all this was another fantastic mini break, and the hotel complements what is for us a lovely part of Northumberland. An excellent base for exploring the area, and always a joy to return to.
No question that we will be returning again as soon as time and work allows.
Thank you to the whole team for another super stay.
July 9, 2023A luxury holiday - A huge thank you to everyone at the Cookie Jar for looking after us so well last week. The Hotel is beautiful and the staff fantastic. Nothing was too much... read more trouble. The chef took up the challenge of a special diet and the food we both had was delicious. The room was so comfortable with a huge bed and a separate seating area.
Attention to detail clearly comes from the top and it is well worth it.
The hotel is perfectly located close to the Castle.

Fabulous place in wonderful town - We had an excellent stay here, it is certainly not cheap but once there you can see why! The rooms are all different, beautifully decorated and nice touches like a... read more jar of cookies left every day! Beds are very large and comfortable. We ate in their bistro and the food was very good, especially the breakfast, even local kippers.
Perfect place to explore from as it is right in the town next to the castle.F
July 7, 2023Night away Birthday treat ! - From walking into the reception, the experience begins, beautiful decor, and a warm welcome. The room was the Mother Superior and was way above our expectations, ... read more absolutely gorgeous with a walk in shower and a roll top bath. Every thing looked brand new with a huge bed. The evening meal was superb and top marks to the chef, five stars to him or her not forgetting the restaurant staff who were very friendly and professional, big thank you to the young man regarding our choice of wine he was very knowledgeable regarding this subject. The breakfast was delicious full English for both of us and all local produce. Thank you to all the staff, we really enjoyed our stay at the Cookie Jar .
July 1, 2023What an absolute gem. A superb job has been made of carefully renovating this beautiful old building, Tasteful elegance throughout combined with such a welcoming warmth. There have been... read more many superlatives recorded by previous guests and it would be hard to surpass any of them. Every single member of staff were not only efficient but a joy to interact with and made you feel immediately welcome from the outset plus genuinely eager to go out of their way to look after you. The dining could not be faulted and you can ignore the odd disgruntled comment of being overpriced; the quality, presentation and service together with the overall ambience is more than first class and deservedly of the price. We also indulged one day with afternoon tea...oh wow...!!!
Sadly we needed to cut our visit a day short and the lovely Lynne insisted we could not commence our morning start of 500 miles back to Cornwall without one of their stupendously fabulous cooked breakfasts so arranged with Chef to start half an hour early. Thoughtful, caring and appreciated.
Unfortunately there was not an opportunity to talk to you personally Debbie but take it from me you are doing everything right and are blessed to have the people you have around you in making The Cookie Jar a memorable experience. Thank you.
